Titus 1

 Darby Translation (1889) - go to synopsisAuthorised (King James) Version (1769)
1Paul, bondman of God, and apostle of Jesus Christ according to [the] faith of God's elect, and knowledge of [the] truth which [is] according to piety;Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;
2in [the] hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the ages of time,In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
3but has manifested in its own due season his word, in [the] proclamation with which I have been entrusted, according to [the] commandment of our Saviour God;But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;
4to Titus, my own child according to [the] faith common [to us]: Grace and peace from God [the] Father, and Christ Jesus our Saviour.To Titus, [mine] own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, [and] peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.
5For this cause I left thee in Crete, that thou mightest go on to set right what remained [unordered], and establish elders in each city, as I had ordered thee:For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:
6if any one be free from all charge [against him], husband of one wife, having believing children not accused of excess or unruly.If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
7For the overseer must be free from all charge [against him] as God's steward; not headstrong, not passionate, not disorderly through wine, not a striker, not seeking gain by base means;For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;
8but hospitable, a lover of goodness, discreet, just, pious, temperate,But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
9clinging to the faithful word according to the doctrine taught, that he may be able both to encourage with sound teaching and refute gainsayers.Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
10For there are many and disorderly vain speakers and deceivers of people's minds, specially those of [the] circumcision,For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:
11who must have their mouths stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which ought not [to be taught] for the sake of base gain.Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.
12One of themselves, a prophet of their own, has said, Cretans are always liars, evil wild beasts, lazy gluttons.One of themselves, [even] a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians [are] alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.
13This testimony is true; for which cause rebuke them severely, that they may be sound in the faith,This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;
14not turning [their] minds to Jewish fables and commandments of men turning away from the truth.Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.
15All things [are] pure to the pure; but to the defiled and unbelieving nothing [is] pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.Unto the pure all things [are] pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving [is] nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
16They profess to know God, but in works deny [him], being abominable, and disobedient, and found worthless as to every good work.They profess that they know God; but in works they deny [him], being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

Titus 2

1But do thou speak the things that become sound teaching;But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
2that the elder men be sober, grave, discreet, sound in faith, in love, in patience;That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
3that the elder women in like manner be in deportment as becoming those who have to say to sacred things, not slanderers, not enslaved to much wine, teachers of what is right;The aged women likewise, that [they be] in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
4that they may admonish the young women to be attached to [their] husbands, to be attached to [their] children,That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
5discreet, chaste, diligent in home work, good, subject to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be evil spoken of.[To be] discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
6The younger men in like manner exhort to be discreet:Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
7in all things affording thyself as a pattern of good works; in teaching uncorruptedness, gravity,In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine [shewing] uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
8a sound word, not to be condemned; that he who is opposed may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say about us:Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
9bondmen to be subject to their own masters, to make themselves acceptable in everything; not gainsaying;[Exhort] servants to be obedient unto their own masters, [and] to please [them] well in all [things]; not answering again;
10not robbing [their masters], but shewing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the teaching which [is] of our Saviour God in all things.Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
11For the grace of God which carries with it salvation for all men has appeared,For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
12teaching us that, having denied impiety and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, and justly, and piously in the present course of things,Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
13awaiting the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ;Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
14who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all lawlessness, and purify to himself a peculiar people, zealous for good works.Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
15These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise thee.These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

Titus 3

 Darby Translation (1889)Authorised (King James) Version (1769)
1Put them in mind to be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient to rule, to be ready to do every good work,Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
2to speak evil of no one, not to be contentious, [to be] mild, shewing all meekness towards all men.To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, [but] gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.
3For we were once ourselves also without intelligence, disobedient, wandering in error, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, [and] hating one another.For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, [and] hating one another.
4But when the kindness and love to man of our Saviour God appeared,But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
5not on the principle of works which [have been done] in righteousness which we had done, but according to his own mercy he saved us through [the] washing of regeneration and renewal of [the] Holy Spirit,Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
6which he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
7that, having been justified by his grace, we should become heirs according to [the] hope of eternal life.That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
8The word [is] faithful, and I desire that thou insist strenuously on these things, that they who have believed God may take care to pay diligent attention to good works. These things are good and profitable to men.[This is] a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
9But foolish questions, and genealogies, and strifes, and contentions about the law, shun; for they are unprofitable and vain.But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
10An heretical man after a first and second admonition have done with,A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject;
11knowing that such a one is perverted, and sins, being self-condemned.Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.
12When I shall send Artemas to thee, or Tychicus, use diligence to come to me to Nicopolis; for I have decided to winter there.When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter.
13Zenas the lawyer and Apollos set forward diligently on their way, that nothing may be lacking to them;Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them.
14and let ours also learn to apply themselves to good works for necessary wants, that they may not be unfruitful.And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.
15All with me salute thee. Salute those who love us in [the] faith. Grace [be] with you all.All that are with me salute thee. Greet them that love us in the faith. Grace [be] with you all. Amen. <<[It was written to Titus, ordained the first bishop of the church of the Cretians, from Nicopolis of Macedonia.]>>
